Student art at FFECC

In celebration of Black History Month, the Future Forward Education & Career Center proudly spotlighted Alma Thomas, the first graduate of Howard University's Art Department. 🎨

Our students delved into the life and work of Alma Thomas, studying her unique artistic style and creating their own pieces inspired by her vibrant and abstract approach. This initiative not only honored Thomas's legacy but also encouraged students to explore their creativity and appreciate the contributions of African American artists.

A fascinating fact about Alma Thomas is that her painting titled "RESURRECTION" was selected by Michelle Obama to be displayed in the White House dining room during the Obama administration. This marked a historic moment as it was the first painting by an African American woman to be featured in the White House.

Through this project, we aim to inspire our students and celebrate the rich cultural heritage that Alma Thomas represents.
